The Ultimate Guide to Military
What Does Challenge Coin Really Mean?
It is expected among military people for them to give their very best that even some work harder to exceed expectations. There are instances wherein the productivity, efficiency and act of bravery of our soldiers are already exceptional and their superiors make sure that they are recognized by it. Actually for these brave men, a simple verbal expression of saying thanks or a gesture of handshake is enough for them.
On the other hand, military coins are yet another way to which soldiers can be thanked for the outstanding commitment to their work. These coins carry a special meaning and at the same time, irreplaceable. Whenever soldiers returned from deployment, they are typically given with a challenge coin together with their personal stuff including but not limited to dog tags, photos and wedding rings.
Military challenge coins are available in different colors, sizes and shapes and often customized to represent the unique situation it is presented. There are so many soldiers who carry challenge coins and they bring it wherever they go. Leaders have different ways of designing their coin and so, expect that it varies depending on the owner like for instance, a command sergeant has a regular battalion coin that is representing his group and a separate personal coin with engravings of his rank and name. When the coin is presented to you, it shows a personal expression of them saying thanks for the hard work given.
But it doesn’t mean that you must be an officer or even a leader to receive and give these military coins. The reason for this is that, soldiers can also give and receive it. To give you an example, you can acquire coins from Post Exchange and then, award it to fellow soldiers for their deeds or specific actions. Generally speaking, the more unique the coin is, the bigger the value it has, though mass production coins bought in PX may have a whole new meaning to its recipient. Challenge coins aren’t necessarily given within the chain of command. There are instances that someone in one chain of command who’s interacting on a regular basis with another might recognize another person’s contribution and can do so with challenge coin.
Even though coins are representing serious situations, they are typically part of a more relaxed tradition as well. At times, they’re used to challenge other soldiers in the battalion. If for example soldiers are out in the field and have a challenge coin, it can be used for challenging other soldiers in producing their coin there and then. Whoever does not produce one need to buy everyone a round of drinks, again this will depend on the situation.
